Ask the Work-from-Home Coach
Alyson Preston is a freelance editor, writer and Web producer who works out of her home office in Swampscott, Massachusetts. With hands-on experience starting up a home-based consulting business, as well as many years working in an office, Alyson understands the differences between these two workplaces.
During eight years at Ziff-Davis in New York and Boston, Alyson worked for Computer Shopper, PC Sources, both PC Week print and PC Week Online, and helped launch ZDNet's Computer Shopper.com Internet-based shopping site.
Following the birth of her first baby, Alyson went back to Ziff-Davis in a part-time job share arrangement. Working in both home and company offices, she encountered the difficulties of remote computing, one of the most challenging obstacles facing the work-from-home employee. After her second baby, Alyson struck out on her own and now works for herself.
Mother to Emily, age two, and Graham, almost one, Alyson also enjoys gardening, cooking and tennis. Alyson moved east from Santa Barbara, California, where she earned her bachelor's degree in French from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
