FREE AGENT GUIDE: One-Man Marketing Machine Tells His Success Story

It may have required part-time moonlighting at Macy's, but David
Braverman managed a smooth transition from corporate marketer to
proprietor of his own marketing management agency. Alyson Preston
spoke with David about what it takes to go solo and keep your
business healthy in the long run.

THAT'S NEWS TO ME: The IRS Says You Can Swap Web Ads for Free

A couple of weeks ago we told you about free Web banner ad exchange
services offered by the likes of bCentral, SmartAge and HyperBanner.
Since then, the IRS has come out with good news for companies who
barter ads on the Web: The companies can usually do so without
incurring taxes. This ruling removes doubts that small business
proprietors may have had about both the potential tax liability and
the paperwork burden of these ad exchanges.

HEARD ON THE BOARD: Executive Coach Gets a Plan to Unearth Prospects

Monster member Teri recently asked: "I want to get very focused and
specific in my marketing efforts [for my executive coaching business]
and am considering sending my marketing information to human
resources and management development departments in Fortune 500
companies in the New York City area. First, do you think this is a
good approach; second, should I be sending my information to the most
senior staff person in the department; and third, how might I go
about getting a mailing list of these companies, departments and
department heads?"

The Free Agent Advisor answers: "I think it's a fine idea to contact
key people at these companies. But unfortunately, I don't think it's
as simple as buying a mailing list or even identifying all the HR
people with a certain title. You're going to need to do a bit of
digging at each company in order to identify the person in power
who's most likely to be receptive to your proposal..."
