What's up in Talent Market this week? --------------------------------------------------------------------- IN THIS ISSUE: Week of February 14, 2000 -- FREE AGENT GUIDE: How to Market Your Business Online -- WEB FREEBIES AND FINDS: Stop Singing the Single-Phone-Line Blues -- HEARD ON THE BOARD: Proofreading Without the Sleeve Guards -- MONSTER TALENT MARKET: 10,000 Companies Want Your Talent --------------------------------------------------------------------- FREE AGENT GUIDE: How to Market Your Business Online Online marketing: It sounds so technical, and who knows what it costs? The good news is, lots of Web-based services have made it pretty simple to set up a Web site, start up a promotional e-newsletter, even advertise your business on other sites. And there's more good news: Many of these services are free. The bad news: Your competition has already taken the online plunge! So get cracking with John Rossheim's practical guide to marketing your business online. http://content.talentmarket.monster.com/weeklyarticle/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- WEB FREEBIES AND FINDS: Stop Singing the Single-Phone-Line Blues Don't you hate it when you miss an important call from a client because you were online (and on the phone line) helping another customer? Don't you also hate the idea of paying $20 or $30 per month for an additional phone line? A new breed of Internet call-waiting and phone-answering services may have the answer, for free or cheap. BuzMe.com, Call Wave and InfoInteractive offer various combinations of services that can notify you of an incoming call and provide Caller ID, offer to route the call to voicemail, even let you pick up the phone while you're online. You guessed the catch: These services all play games to try to get you to upgrade from the free service to a paid subscription. Still, you might save a couple of hundred dollars per year. Check out the Web sites and just hope you don't lose another sale while you're online! http://Buzme.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- HEARD ON THE BOARD: Proofreading Without the Sleeve Guards Monster member Susan recently asked: "I have used proofreading skills in various job and volunteer situations -- with grant-writing, legal documents, short publications, newspaper articles, student work, etc. I am employed part-time and am interested in consulting as a proofreader. What is a reasonable hourly wage? Any marketing suggestions?" The Free Agent Advisor answers: "Scan these Monster Talent Market listings for proofreaders and you'll see rates ranging from $15 to $20 per hour: http://talentmarket.monster.com/auctionsearch.asp?q=proofread To get the best rate, try to get work in upscale markets like New York, Boston, etc. There's no reason you can't get work in these markets and do it remotely. Here are some marketing tips: -- Project yourself as a high-end proofreader; i.e., in your resume and on the phone, don't mention the volunteering or correcting student work. Play up the legal work, etc. -- Consider hooking up with an existing Web-based proofing service or starting your own..." Got your own question?
