Does it make sense for you to negotiate for equity in your clients' companies as part of your consulting fee? If you do vest yourself in your clients' start-up businesses, how can you hedge against the daunting odds that they will fail? To get the answers, John Rossheim recently spoke to computer consultants who have placed large bets on their clients' future success. http://content.talentmarket.monster.com/weeklyarticle/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FRIDAY AFTERNOON CHAT: Chat with the Free Agent Advisor Is Now at 2pm EST Fridays It's 2pm Friday - too late to finish that project, too early to crack open a cold one and start the weekend. Which makes it the perfect time to chat live with the Free Agent Advisor. Bring your questions about how to start, manage or grow your independent-professional practice. And bring that friend who always brings his business questions to you. To chat live with the Free Agent Advisor Fridays at 2 p.m. EST or with the Work-from-Home Coach Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST, log in to http://my.monster.com/mchat.asp and join us in the #Events room. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FREE AGENT POLL: We Asked, You Answered Last week we asked: Do you obtain contract work through an agency? 39% Never 30% Occasionally 16% Usually 13% Always Total: 353 votes This week's question: What source of outside capital have you used for your business? Cast your vote here: http://talentmarket.monster.com/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TAX SEASON COUNTDOWN: Tip #3: Drive Yourself to Tax Savings What's the most underutilized deduction for independent professionals? It may well be business use of your car. You can take the deduction using either the standard mileage rate method (at 30-plus cents per mile) or the actual expense method, wherein you factor in the costs of the vehicle, gas, oil, repairs, insurance, license and registration fees, even car washes. Free agents who travel a lot on business are often surprised to discover that they get a bigger deduction with the actual expense method. With either method, you need to log your business mileage as you drive it, not on April 15 of the following year. More details are available directly from the IRS: http://www.irs.gov/prod/tax_edu/teletax/tc510.html Tune in next week for Tip #4. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MONSTER TALENT MARKET: Here are three of the thousands of profiles on the Monster Talent Market this week: ** DOT-COM DOYEN(NE) ** The talent: "E-commerce Consultant" The target project: "Discovery, design, and production of E-commerce sites.
