THE MONSTER TALENT MARKET NEWSLETTER Where free agent talent and opportunity meet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IN THIS ISSUE: Week of April 10, 2000 -- FREE AGENT GUIDE: Self-Employed, With Children -- WEB DISCOVERIES: Are You the Type to Try an Online Print Shop? -- FREE AGENT POLL: How Much Vacation Time Do You Take Each Year? -- HEARD ON THE BOARD: Desktop Designer Needs to Draw on Her Network -- MONSTER TALENT MARKET: Nadine the Money Maker and Content's King ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FREE AGENT GUIDE: Self-Employed, With Children What happens when an independent professional sets out to ply her trade from home -- with her two toddlers playing it all for laughs? Read Alyson Preston's account for a heaping helping of humorous and important insights. http://content.talentmarket.monster.com/weeklyarticle/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WEB DISCOVERIES: Are You the Type to Try an Online Print Shop? If you're looking to get more control over the look of your business stationery without earning a certificate in graphic design, you should consider the new breed of online print shops. You design your stationery using their Web-based tools, then place your order with a credit card. Prices are reasonable and if there are any typos, you only have yourself to blame. Iprint.com, the best-known service, lets you choose a layout for your business card or other stationery, enter the text, select ink colors and paper, and nudge the design toward your idea of perfection. The selection of ink colors and paper is limited; do go to the site and order the free paper samples right now, so you'll have them in hand when you're ready to create your stationery Kinkos.com's printing service offers an interesting twist. You set graphic "sliders" to indicate your preferences along three dimensions: contemporary vs. traditional, energetic vs. reserved and artistic vs. structured. The site uses these settings to offer you suggestions for type faces and so on. We were miffed that all of the business-card layouts called for a business name and organizational title; what about us free agents who just go by our personal names? Mbe.com (Mail Boxes Etc.) also offers an online print shop, but we crashed out of the Web browser when attempting to download a font applet that the site offered as part of the design process. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FREE AGENT POLL: We Asked, You Answered Last week we asked: Who prepares the taxes for your business? 44% Me, myself and I 40% My accountant 9% A tax-preparation service 6% My spouse Total: 311 votes This week's question: How much vacation time do you take each year? Cast your vote here: http://talentmarket.monster.com/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HEARD ON THE BOARD: Desktop Designer Needs to Draw on Her Network Monster member Julie recently asked: "I am thinking of working from home as a desktop graphics designer. I do a lot of stuff for friends and church and my job. Any suggestions for getting started in this endeavor?" The Work-from-Home Coach answers: "Since you already have some clients, I think you are all set. You just need to get the word out through friends, colleagues, clients, etc., and get more business. You can also do some more traditional marketing if you want, depending on how much you want to grow your business…" Read the rest here: http://forums.monster.com/viewmessage.asp?messageid=897299 Post your own question on one of these Monster Talent Market message boards: Ask the Free Agent Advisor http://boards.talentmarket.monster.com/forum.asp?forum=800 Ask the Work-from-Home Coach http://boards.talentmarket.monster.com/forum.asp?forum=801 Or chat live with the Free Agent Advisor Fridays at 2 p.m. ET or with the Work-from-Home Coach Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
